I am 24 years old and have suffered from depression for most of my life. A couple of years ago I finally talked to my doctor and got a prescription. I started feeling bad again, went back to the doctor and my dosage was doubled. Now again I am feeling bad. I am going back to the doctor's again for a new prescription and to finally get a referral for someone to talk to. I have hesitated to seek counseling mostly because I am scared to do so. Today is the first time I have looked at an on-line support group and it has been wonderful. I hate the fact that so many people feel as horribly as I do, but am also relieved not to be alone. I have read so many posts by people that express exactly how I feel - it's amazing. I have always felt so alone and somewhat like a freak thinking I am the only one who felt this way.
Anyways, I was wondering about others' experiences with medication and counseling. Since I have had two different prescriptions that have not worked, I am worried about medicine not helping. Have others had trouble with their prescriptions, and, if so, if they eventually found something that worked. I have not had counseling, and wanted to know how helpful others have found it.

Medication that is effective for one person may be not so effective for another. It is often trial and error until you get the correct medication. Also, people have genetic variations of how they metabolize drugs. People who lack certain enzymes may not properly respond to drugs that require these enzymes. And antidepressants also differ from one another. Here is some information for you about antidepressants:
Counseling? Well I feel that you get out of it about what you put into it. You have to be willing to do some of the things that the counselor suggests to you. You really need to learn the things she will teach you, and apply them to your life on a daily basis. You also need to be sure you are comfortable with the counselor and feel like she is helping. You may have to try more than one to get a match. I have been to a lot of counselors and have had good luck with counselors for myself. I have had problems with counselors for my foster or adopted kids. Sometimes they didn't support me as the Mom, and my rules for the kids. I have had some bad experiences in that area. But since you are an adult that shouldn't play in for you. Best Wishes
Hi, i have tried paxil for 3 days, and it was scary, it made my anxiety worse, then i tried lexapro for a few days and i felt like i had the stomach flu. Then i started celexa about 2 weeks ago, and it seems to be working for me. i take 10 mg, but am gona start on 20 mg tonight. i take it for panic/ mood disorder. my panic attacks and moodiness is better than before, but not as happy as i wana be so im starting 20 mg. I have no side effects from it, only i take it at night cause 2 hours after i take it, im out cold. Although everyone reacts different on different meds, i suggest anyone try celexa, cause it has hardly no side effects and it works good on everyone i know thats on it. Good luck to you i hope you find the right med for you, it is alot of trial and error though sometimes. Keep us posted and let us know if you got on a diff med and how it works for you. Take care!
