Dysthymia or minor depression is characterized by milder but long-lasting symptoms compared with clinical depression. Patients affected by this disorder will have to suffer from it for a minimum of two years. However, it will not disable a patient as much as major depression does. Usually, patients will not need to abstain from working and keep themselves away from the hospital beds as well.
Only close to three percent of the population will experience dysthymia at some time. Women are more prone to this disorder than men are. The unmarried and the poor fall pray to this disease more than others do. Adolescence, young adulthood and less commonly middle age are the periods in which one develops the dysthymia symptoms.
