Unfortunately, the patch is not a new kind of antidepressant; it's just a new way to deliver it. Also, that particular antidepressant is usually the last choice of doctors. Hopefully your doctor will be able to find an AD or combination of ADs that works for you.

The patch is good because it goes directly in your bloodstream and up to your brain. I am resistant to many meds and so my doctor wants me to try the patch. It is not the last choice that doctors make. Get some more information about it.

The antidepressant that the patch delivers, a MAO inhibitor, is used much less frequently than other antidepressants due to the potential serious side effects when it is combined with certain food and drink. (It was even used in an episode of Law and Order to kill someone by putting it in their glass of wine.)

If you want more information, you can read about it here: http://mentalhealth.about.com/cs/psychopharmacology/a/mao.htm or here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monoamine_oxidase_inhibitor

When you are resistant to other meds, at least you have another option with the patch. Most patients may do good on medications, but if you are like me and Jess it gives us some hope. I wouldn't believe everything you see on T.V. I have had serious depression since I was a child. Most patients are helped without using a MAO inhibitor, but unfortunately there are some who may need it.

Some people do find these medications to be lifesaving. For these people MAOIs can be the best treatment. As long as they are vigilant about their diet they can get real relief from their depression.

Yes, absolutely. I myself have been lucky enough not to have depression that's resistant to treatment, but if I was, watching my diet would be a small price to pay for relief from it.
