My doctor is suggesting an intrathecal pump, but wants me to have a psychological evaluation first. Has anyone else had this? What is the evaluation supposed to show?

Thanks for any answers.

Hello Judy and Welcome to the Chronic Pain Connection.

I've heard here on this site and on others that some doctors require a phyc eval before the trial of your pain pump.
Another time that a person in pain has to go through this eval is when you go through the SSDI process and that's when I had mine.
When they origanally told me I had to have one, I remember being very insentced & offended about the requirement, but after I thought about it for awhile, it was not that big of a deal for me.
The psychiatrist was very nice, he asked my all kinds of questions about my life. my childhood, had me spell & count forward & backwards or do simple addition or subtraction, nothing to worry about. It only lasted about a 1/2 an hour to 45 minutes. He looked to see whether I was on time & how I behaved in the waiting area, just kind of weird stuff. I'd do it again if anyone needed to know and I would not be nervous at all. From what I read in my report, it seemed pretty much like they were wanting this docs opinion of my mental health and I did fine.

I know that if it comes up again in my pain process, I'm certainly not going to be nervous like I was the first time. Just relax and go in and talk to him. Not a big deal at all.

Good luck
Betty

hi judy - they also have you go through these evaluations to show that you are not an "addict" or drug seeker. I mean, our bodies do physically become addicted, but it is not because our minds have convinced us of that. So, they look for signs of addicted personalities or behaviors. It isn't something to worry about - personally i didn't have one, but i have been with my pain dr. for 9 1/2 years so she knows me very well. The upside to having a meeting is that it will give you more time to think about your options and if the pump is the best next step - i would be worried if a dr. just said "okay, lets get you scheduled asap and get this thing done"! it took me about 6 months of praying, talking, thinking, praying...before i made the decision to have a pump placed. it has only been 2 1/2 weeks, so i am in recovery mode...if you want to keep in touch, you know how to find me! Good luck - God Bless and think about it. Smiler

i have primary immune disease and receive a form of chemo every 20 days. forever. my 2 daughters also have the disease and same treatments. unfortunately, i wasn't diagnosed as early as them, so i have numerous medical complications!
