I have chronic lower back/hip pain related to a herniated disc, DDD, stenosis, and arthritis in my spine and hips. I had a surgery about 3 years ago to repair nerve root damage caused by a botched laminectomy about 4 years ago. The nerve damage resulted in foot drop in my right foot/calf.
My question is.. recently I have noticed that when I stand or sit for more that about 5-10 minutes my feet (both) start to feel like well the only way I can describe it is if you have been working on your feet for about 8-10 hours. They feel swollen and painful. They do not change color or anything, at least not that I can tell.
But when I lift one up as in changing my weight from one to the other, it feels like the blood is rushing back to that foot. The only way to relieve the "pressure" is to sit and raise both my feet up on a stool or coffee table.
I hope someone knows what I am saying. If you have worked on your feet all day you know the feeling..I have. That's how I know how to describe it. Please I hope someone here can tell me what is happening to me. I am terrified.
My name is Dan and I'm the Webmaster here at ChronicPainConnection.com. Thanks for your question--it sounds like a concern that might be common to many people.
I'm going to forward your question along to Dr. Borigini, our resident expert on chronic pain. When I hear back, I'll post his answer on the message board or in a future "Ask the Expert" column.
I've got a drop-foot in my right foot as well. It never fails, every night, even if I have been resting all day and not walking around much, my foot and ankle swells. It kind of sounds like we have similar problems as far as medical conditions go. I have a deteriorating disc (DDD) in my lower spine and problems with my hips since my accident. Really the only thing I've found that helps with my foot/ankle problems is to keep it elevated (like you do with your stool or coffee table) and I also wrap a heating pad around the swollen area. That seems to get the swelling and discomfort down pretty quickly. Another thing I have that helps are under-the-knee warmers. I'm not sure if you are familiar with them, but they are kind of like a big thick knee-high sock, without the foot part. That plus the heating pad works wonders. I hope this helps you a little bit.
Hi Stefany! I just wanted to say hi, and welcome! I'm the expert here on Chronic Pain Connection and will be moderating the message boards. If you ever have any questions please don't hesitate to ask, or you can e-mail me anytime - healthcentralstacy at gmail dot com. I'm also available other ways if you want to chat. We're going through a lot of exciting changes here that I think you will really enjoy.. a lot of new content and a whole new look with ways for everyone to interact and share. Thanks for posting how you deal with your drop foot! When you say "under the knee warmers" do you mean like a legwarmer that dancers use? or like the legwarmers that have become more fashionable lately? Anyway, welcome again - glad to have you! Sincerely, Stacy

Actually, I got these off of a diabetic-type website, where they sell diabetic socks and stuff like that. So I guess they would be closer to the types that dancers wear?
Dear Stefany, Because of some technical difficulties (we're still getting used to this new software!) I accidentally took down your post. I did make a copy of it before it was deleted, so if you would like to email me at healthcentralstacy@gmail.com I can send you a copy to re-post. I'm so sorry!!!! Sincerely, Stacy
Hi Stefany, I'm sorry that you haven't gotten many replies to your posts, we are in the middle of a huge redesign. In fact, if you did not get the Chronic Pain Connection newsletter today, I would be more than happy to forward it to you. The new site is absolutely amazing - it has ways for everyone to interact and share advice, recommendations, ask questions, etc and it isn't complicated. I think that you would really like it, and you will get responses to your questions there. Also, the forum will be MUCH more active very soon, as we have a new partnership with a non-profit site forming. I was actually working on a response to your questions when I accidentally deleted your post (I'm so sorry about that!). You and I have a lot in common as I am young as well (25) and have been through similar experiences. I definitely have a lot to say in my reply to you, so I would like for you to repost it. The new website will be going live for everyone soon, but as I said, I would be more than happy to give you a sneak preview, and you could post there as well as here on the message board, if you would like. I hope to hear from you soon, Sincerely, Stacy healthcentralstacy@gmail.com
I'm sorry. I guess I should unsubscribe from my thread. I am getting replies that do not have anything to do with my original question. Besides, the original thread is close to a year old. Mods, could you please archive this for me?
