I have been on vicodin for well over a year now, we just had a miscarriage, and want to try to get pregnent again and i was wondering if it is safe or ok to take vicodin while your pregnant?
According to the PDR, Vicodin is in the FDA's pregnancy category C, which means: "This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby, and could cause addiction or withdrawal symptoms in a newborn. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment."
You definitely need to talk to your doctor about it before trying to get pregnant again. If you can, try to see an obstetrician that specializes in high-risk pregnancies. There may be other options for treating your pain without as much risk to the baby.
I noticed you also posted your question in the "Pregnancy, Motherhood & Chronic Pain" thread. As I'm sure you've already read in those posts, you can have a successful pregnancy in spite of having to deal with chronic pain. Nicole (aka Ice Cream Goddess) has done a wonderful job of sharing her experiences and is a great encourager.
Use of opioid analgesics during pregnancy may cause withdrawal in baby like irritability and excessive crying, tremors, hyperactive reflexes, increased respiratory rate, increased stools, sneezing, yawning, vomiting, and fever. However, opioids are not strongly contraindicated in pregnancy. Discuss with you doctor what pain medicine is most suitable if you are trying to get pregnant.
