Hi all,

It's probably silly to ask since everybody reacts different to meds- (especially mE Roll Eyes) but after a couple of years literally- of pleading and looking I've finally found a pain specialist who will see me- (I have MediCal in CA. and most docs won't take it or even let you come as a pay patient if you have it!)

Anyway, my MD has been reluctantly treating me for pain- with Methadone primarily-
but he's been unwilling to go any higher than 50mg. a day. Anybody else here on Methadone?

At the same time I went on Methadone- I also switched my antid. to Cymbalta for the pain relief factor. ONe of these drugs made me gain weight- I thought it was the Cymbalta and went off it, but haven't really lost any weight.

I'm curious as I go to this pain specialist what pain meds you all have used that were
"no weight gainers and no constipation causers"
or is there such a bird?

I'm also on Fioricet, Neurontin, Topamax for pain but have been for some time.

I have to avoid weight gain because of a 20 year eating disorder and constipation because of dropped organs and a tethered spinal cord. I also have to avoid swelling and thinning of the blood~ bleeding problem.

My pain is mostly neurological in basis and some ppl. with like conditions are on Diuldad?

Let's do the impossible!
it never hurts to ask, right?

Hello Zoe

I was just out checking the other forums tonight and ran into your question.

I'm not certain which one of your meds caused you to gain weight, but I would just guess it was the Cymbalta. I'm not all that familiar with Methadone, so can't really comment. I've never gained weight on my pain meds, but have on several AD meds.
As far as the pain meds & constipation goes. I don't know of any of the regular pain meds that don't cause some constipation in most of us.

I took a pain mgt course a few years ago and they gave me a bowel maintenance plan that works really well and I've shared it with others if your interested. I would although, show it to your physician before you used it to make sure it would not cause trouble with your spacific illnesses. It works faily well for me as long as I follow it and don't forget my stool softners before bed and go several days without realizing how long it's been since I went potty. lol I'm a forgetful one.
Just thought I'd add my two cents. lol

Take Care and I hope you find a combo of meds that works well.
Hugs
Betty

Hey there,
I am new to chronic pain but have still tried many meds. I also believe that it was the cymbalta that made you gain weight. My doctors once told me that was one of the side effects. I also took methadone for awhile and had horrible symptoms from it and I was actually taking a little bit stronger of a dose then you I believe. Anyways I have been on 10mg of hydrocodone for the past few months and have found that somehow it works much better then the methadone. I dont know if this is something you have tried, but it works very well for me and there are no side effects for me especially weight gain. Dont know if this helped at all but hope it did!!

Good Luck!
Amanda

I am personally overweight but am going to advise about the constipation problem. Fiber and lots of water kiddo. Fiber keeps them bowels a movin and water is needed for that too. Both make you feel full longer and Personally I like the high fiber breads better than the tasteless white stuff. You can make your own. I also eat dried fruit by the handful if I am a bit stopped up. Excercise helps too if you can stand it. Even if it is just walking. Hey it helps our best friends the dogs get their bowels going right? Giggle. Lucky for people we have indoor plumbing and tp. I find that my pain meds make me feel better and I eat. I have had to make sure that I keep veggies and fruit around or I will eat candy and cookies instead. Now I have a big plastic bag full of peeled carrots and little cucumbers in the fridge and wish I had cherry tomatoes to go with them. Yummy stuff!!! And if you require a dip (I dont) try using plain yogurt mixed with fresh herbs or salad dressing mix. Gives you extra calcium and is lower in fat than sour cream.
Best of luck to ya!!!
