Lately, I've been having problems with my blood pressure. I've had extremely high readings. I don't know whether to put that down to stress over the TMJ, the TMJ causing it, or if I really do have high blood pressure. Has anyone else had this kind of situation? I'm now wondering if high blood pressure is responsible for exacerbating some of the symptoms I have.

Hi there,
Have you been in a lot of pain? Pain can most definitely make your blood pressure and pulse higher. When I am in pain, my bp is noticeably higher and so is my pulse. In fact lately, I have been in more pain than usual and have noticed that my pulse is always significantly high.
It's kind of a catch 22 because the pain creates both high blood pressure AND anxiety (which causes high blood pressure as well)... so it's sometimes hard to tell what is causing it.
On the other hand, have you seen your primary care physician lately? This would be something I would mention to him or her. Do you have other risk factors for high blood pressure?
Anyway, as for listing what causes it, I'm not sure what you would put down. I would check with your doctor first, because if it is abnormally high, he or she might want to do something about that. What is it, if I may ask? And what is it normally?

IT is normally 110 to 119 over 80 something. I was at the dentist on Monday and it was 160 over 80 something. They took it thirty minutes later, and it was 140 over 80. I had had a somewhat bad day the day before and I was annoyed about paying the dentist bill. When I went to the same dentist in late October, I was hoping the dentist would diagnose the problem and my blood pressure was 119 over 82. I have been very stressed lately and I've had more bad days recently so I do think that may be a cause. I just don't know what to do at this point because I don't want to be put on something that will be permanent if there's another cause.

Hi cmleidi,

I just want to reassure you a little... you should definately get this checked out, as it's not normal, but the diastolic (2nd number)reading is not going up too high, which is a lot safer than if both numbers were to fly off the charts. That being said, you want of course both readings to be low. My friend who happens to be a nurse is in her first trimester of pregnancy and is having extremely high blood pressure. She has been put on bed-rest for 1 month. That's basically what she was explaining about blood pressure the other day.

Like Stacy said, and as you seem to have concluded, anxiety could definately be making your pressure go up. But anxiety is not a necessary cause of hypertension. An adult in general is considered to have high blood pressure at a reading of 140/90 or higher.

I looked up the "official" readings for you:

quote:
American Heart Association recommended blood pressure levels

Blood Pressure Category
Systolic(mm Hg) Diastolic(mm Hg)

Normal less than 120 and less than 80
Prehypertension 120–139 or 80–89

High
Stage 1 140–159 or 90–99
Stage 2 160 or higher or 100 or higher

I am the opposite actually, my blood pressure tends to be on the lower side.

Good luck!
Jenn

"Pain is meant to wake us up. People try to hide their pain. But they're wrong. Pain is something to carry, like a radio. You feel your strength in the experience of pain. It's all in how you carry it. That's what matters. Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you're letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel your pain.” -Jim Morrison

I've got it the other way around. My systolic is fine, but the diastolic is high. Not sure what we're going to do about it, I have to go back in a couple weeks. Yay.

I was put on Lisinopril for HBP. All the tests came back normal for blood pressure. My doctor told me that taking Lisinopril would help stabilize my blood pressure. I have noticed that I'm not as prone to anger as I was.
