Hello everyone.
Although I'm new to this message board, I'm not new to TMJ. I've been suffering for about 10 years now. Although I have had snapping and popping in my jaw for more than 10 years, it was about 10 years ago that my jaw first locked up. Although I have severe flare ups of pain about 3 times a year, lasting from 2 - 5 weeks each, on a daily basis I have not been able to open my mouth more than the width of two fingers for about 5 years now. Additionally, my bite has been 'off' for about that long as well. Mostly I have spent my time going to MDs and Oral Surgeons to manage the pain. Most of the time, they me muscle relaxers which help sometimes, but not a lot.
I have recently been to a Dentist that specializes in NeuroMuscular treatment of TMJ. I am wondering if anyone has had any success wiht this type of treatment? It consists of having an orthotic made to get my jaw into it's natural position, and then, if needed, having work done on my teeth to adjust them to the new position. I am hesitant to do this, because I cannot find too many people who have had this done. I am looking to find what the long term results are. The Dentist talked in generalities, but didn't give me the statistics I was looking for. Any information anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.
