My name is Andrew, I've had back pain for 4 years. I work as a Chef, but I need to change careers because the long hours and time on my feet is killing me. I am currently unemployed and honestly cannot envision working in a kitchen for very long.

Are there any LEGITIMATE work at home/internet jobs that could supplement my income? I've heard it takes years to get on SSDI and I need something to cover my income right away.

Any suggestions?

Hi Andrew,
There are legitimate home-based Internet jobs, but you have to search for them. They're not the ones you see hyped all over, promising big $$ for a few hours work. A few years ago, I was in the same place you are – needing to find work I could do from home. I ended up combining my passion, which was writing, with my experience in helping people with fibromyalgia to become a health writer specializing in FM and other chronic pain illnesses.

I think it's important to look for work in a field you like. It's a lot easier to work through painful times if you're passionate about what you're doing. You obviously have a passion for food and you write well, so you might check out some food-related sites and see if they are looking for food writers. Also sites like About.com that cover a lot of different topics are a possibility. I noticed About is looking for guides for a couple of food sites. Or there may be other topics available that you have an interest and some experience in.

You might also consider starting your own Web site. You can make money by signing up to run Google ads and be an affiliate with Amazon.com. There are probably other food-related affiliates you could find as well. Or you might even want to sell some food products on your site. I have friends who have done this in other areas than food, but they're making pretty good money through their sites. In fact, I'm seriously considering it myself.

If you do decide to apply for SSDI, here's an article that walks you through the steps and tells you what to expect: Applying for Social Security Disability

Good luck to you! I'd love to hear what you decide to do.

Karen
