there is a side effect called tardive dyskinesia and it involves involuntary physical movements of muscles and joints much like Parkinson's. Often time, if left to continue these movements can or may become permanent even after the medication is discontinued. If you have concerns regarding this side effect, please talk with your son's psychiatrist. I think there are medications that can be prescribed to offset this type of side effect but I could be wrong. Still, talking with the psychiatrist would be most advisable.

Jeanette,

I uphold Corey12's suggestion to have further duscussion with your son's psychiatrist with regard to the medication prescribed. You do not mention how long he has been receiving his current treatment. My husband takes 3 different types of meds for bipolar disorder 3 times a day and fortunately does not suffer the secondary effects you mention. Do consult your treating practioner and discuss the possibility of reviewing current treatment and the implications that would impose. It may or may not be possible. It's a never ending journey, may we all travel well.
