Hey, I'm a 21 year old male who was diagnosed this past august with BPII, currently i am taking Lamictal and Wellbutrin. After about 6 weeks of titration up to 200mg on the lamictal i started to stabilize, after another week i felt better than i have in a very long time. This lasted for about a month, and then after a couple small bouts with anxiety and slight lack of motivation (nothing compared to before) i decided wiht my doctor that i would increase the Wellbutrin to 450mg. I started off on alternate days 450,300,450.....then 2 days 450 one day 300. After about 2 weeks i went 4 days in a row on 450 and what seemed to be a hypomanic episode occured. It was nothing serious, just lot's of energy, loquaciousness, not needing a lot of sleep. After the fourth day i crashed and slipped into serious depression for 2 days. And then I evened out and felt better for two days and now for the past two days I've gone back to the state in which drove me to seek help, no motivation, sleeping a lot, grumpy. I'm hoping that this setback is due directly to the increase and after a couple more days on 300mg i will stabilize, but i wasn't exactly happy on 300mg and would have liked a little extra boost. My question is two part. Has anyone else experienced this medication induced hypomania followed shortly by a crash even while on a mood stabilizer? Has anyone experimented with wellbutrin in between the 300 and 450 mg doses, say 375, or had success balancing between 300 and 450 without going too high?
Hopefully you are still reading the board, but I did welbutrin and it really did not do much for me. I was given that with really nothing else so nothing really changed, so then they gave me riatlin, which I do not know why since I am not adhd. So I do not know if I was hyper from the ritalin or the welbutrin. I do know this, the welburtin for a lot people(and it is just people I talk to) so that it does stuff at first then fails to really help anything. I am on lithium with limotrigine or however you spell it, and it seems ot work. I would tell my doctor everything about the medicnie and how you feel about everything, if you already have not. Good Luck
My husband went to a psychatrist yesterday and he wouldnt say he had bipolar or ADHD as a matter of fact he said he didnt feel he did, this was after talking to my husband for only 20 minutes but sent us home with a month supply of Liamictal and a prescription for wellbutrin, it looks like that is what you are on also. Does it help at all? How long was it before you seen any differences? I dont know how high of a dosage he put him on but will try to look as he (the hubby) got defensive and wouldnt let me see and I didnt want to ask too many questions, that seems to upset him terribly. But he is also on 20 mg of Lexaphor too......does anyone know anything about all this medication??? THanks Baby
Funny that the shrink said your husband isn't BP, but then prescribed the same meds that BP's take. Mmmm. Curious. If you do a google on Lexapro and mania or hypomania, I think you will find that it can cause it in some people - or it could be the effexor - I remember it being one of them.
The shrink knows NOTHING - you can't correctly diagnose anyone in only 20 minutes! Welcome to "managed care". That's why these diseases take so long to diagnose and treat and people lead miserable lives.
You may want to look into the Truehope Empower Plus supplement - if you go to Youtube, you can see the 5 or 6 part Discovery network special on it. Just type in Truehope and discovery into the search engine there.
Good luck.

I am the spouse of a man who was diagnosed with bp2 about 6 weeks ago. He sees an MD and a Psychologist who managed an entire clinic for BP disorder in a large city in Canada. Both of these doctors say my husband is bp2, and instantly put him on lithium. They both said lithium is the first course of action, and anti depressants are only tried if the lithium is not all on it's own. I am not sure why you were prescribed an anti depressant. But, I would double check this. I do know that the doctors told us both, that the wrong medication can bring on manic episodes. They also said that a person can feel a lot better for about 6 weeks, then it all goes sideways. Lithium is not a drug. It is a salt. It is , in a way, natural, but a person with BP is not manufacturing enough of it. I do not kno what you need. But, perhaps the meds are a problem. My adivse is, before you go off anyhting!! check back with your doctor and hopefully get a second opinion from an expert in BP disorder, too. Untreated BP is not a pretty sight, and the prognosis is scary if you leave it. So, definitely explore the best options and talk to the doctor. By the way, husband is 53 years old (I am 54), and he lived his whole life untreated and wondered why it was not a really great experience. I am happy for you , that you got diagnosed so young. Good Luck to you.
