Sheri,
Sorry to hear what you're going through now, but hang in there. Your P will help you figure out what the best medicine is for you. Even though we may all be bipolar, there are many individual variations, and we all react differently to drugs. It may take some experimentation to find the best drug or combination of drugs for you.
But it usually takes more than drugs to get our lives going in a good direction, so I hope you'll explore talk therapy and lifestyle changes as well. The talk therapy helps us get our thoughts working for us instead of against us.
By lifestyle I mean your sleep, eating and exercise patterns--basically, how you run your daily life so that it supports you instead of setting you up for breakdown.
All of these things take time, of course, so I hope you'll first of all give yourself a break and be patient.
A support group has helped me over the last few years, so you might check to see if you have one in your area and start going to meetings. You can learn a lot from each other's experience. Check out
Depression & Bipolar Support group listings to find a group in your area.
When I was young, I was the black sheep in my family, so I know how that feels. I wasn't diagnosed as bipolar until my forties, so it took a long time for me to grow out of that role.
Good luck and let us know how things go.
Lynne
