Hello everyone. I have my hands full as I am sure most of you understand. My son is 7 and is bi-polar. It runs in the family, my mother, grandfather, aunt, and a couple of uncles have it. He has an IEP at school and they are usually very good about working with him. He is very impulsive and when he is manic he tends to be violent. Not horribly so, but we have had some pretty bad outbursts. Now, to my question. My son came home from school yesterday (2nd grade) and told me his PE teacher told the class about a kid that brought a knife to school when she was younger and attacked someone. He was arrested. Now, my opinion is that this is not material to be discussing with 7-8 year old kids not to mention my son who has violent tendencies. Now I understand there is a lot going on since the attack at VA Tech. However, there is another kid in my sons class that is worse than my son and is not getting help. My son started to tell me what he would do if a kid brought a knife to school and sounded worried. I think this is too young of an age to approach this and it will only scare the kids or put ideas in their heads. I put a call into my sons psychologist and the principal of the school but have not heard back yet. Am I overreacting? How should I approach this and should I discuss it further with my son now that it has been brought up to make sure he understands that it is wrong? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Tina
