Hubby & I drove 8 hours to his hometown 2 weeks ago. It's a large city in the southern USA. I had never been & I was hoping we could visit his university & that he would show me around. Everything started out just fine. We went to eat at a local college diner where he used to eat. Afterwards, we were trying to locate some free parking. I was driving and after 3-4 tries back & forth on the same street, I suggested that we do something else & come back to the university later. He responded with, "let's just go back to the hotel."

I started crying. I don't know why, but I was feeling overwhelmed with stress. I really needed him to tell me how to get back to the hotel or anywhere else, but he didn't pick up on that. I parked in a KFC parking lot to try to sort things out. Usually we are able to work things out by slowing down and talking. He asked me what was wrong & I started crying again. He then told me to get out of the car. My automatic response was "YOU get out of the car." So he did. And he left me in the parking lot of the KFC, with no idea how to get back to the hotel.

I waited for a good 15 minutes while texting him and calling him on his cell phone. Finally, I got fed up and angry. I found my way out of the parking lot and onto the street. I knew I had to find the main highway and I would be able to get back to the hotel. I was scared and frustrated. H called me when I was heading back to the hotel. He told me that he was checking into the psychiatric ward of a nearby hospital. (He has a history of bipolar disorder) I FLIPPED OUT. I told him I was going to get back to the hotel & sort things out there.

After crying all the way to the hotel and feeling humiliated and ashamed, I called my mother to tell her what was going on. She calmed me down. I called my MIL as well & told her what was going on. She contacted H & tried to talk him out of checking into the hospital. He refused. (Remember, this is 8 hours away from our home!)

I was so angry that I was ready for a divorce. I packed his things in the hotel room & cried a LOT. H called me a few more times, trying to reassure me that he was doing the right thing. Finally, 6 hours later, he called & said that the hospital wouldn't admit him due to insurance issues. I went to pick him up at 8 P.M. He seemed fine, but I was exhausted and very upset. I made him drive back to the hotel because I was still very disoriented.

In the hotel room, we talked about what happened & why I was so upset. H didn't seem to realize how his actions hurt me. He only wanted to get my attention & he would go to extreme lengths to do it. Today, 7 days later, I am still searching to understand what happened. I don't know why someone would do this to another person, especially in an unfamiliar location. Any advice or insight would be helpful.

Thanks.
