Hi,

I'm not so sure how to go about this or even if I'm posting in the right place. My girlfriend is sick. When we first started dating she told me that she had bipolar affect disorder and I've seen the mood swings but nothing like this weekend. We work together at a restaurant and friday night during the dinner hour her ex-husband texted her something nasty. She was visibly upset but seemed to be holding up for the rest of the night, but then she started drinking after work. I could feel her become more and more withdrawn. She reached a certain point that she said she just wanted to go home because she had stuff to do. I knew that she was depressed and begged her not to go but she just ran off.

Saturday morning she called and asked if she could come over. She did and got into bed with me she told me that she cut herself last night and showed me her leg - she must have made 100 cuts up and down her calf and thigh. Then she told me that she took all of her valium because she wanted to be dead and that the only reason that she didn't take also her bottle of sleeping pills is that she was too tired to get up.

I told her that I thought we should go to the hosipital and took her cell phone and called her psychiatrist. The doctor said that she thought it would be a good idea so I took her to the emergency room and they admitted her to the psych ward. She's still there now.

Virtually everyone in my life has told me to walk away from this woman, but I can't - I love her like I know my name. I think that's what love is - not running off when things get tough, but I just don't know what to do or how to behaive to help her. I'm Christian and I've been praying like my butt was on fire. It's been a tremendous source of strength for me. I'm running on His strength not my own.

Please if anyone can give advice or stuff on the internet to read. I don't have so much money but if there are books maybe I could get at the library? I'll do anything to help her.

Thanks in advance and God Bless!

I am like you JBush, I am in love with my husband who is believed to have bipolar and I agree you dont just run out on someone you love. You did the right thing by getting her to the hospital, she might be angry with you but in the long wrong she will know you did it because you love her. I too have been carried by the good Lord at times, like the whole last 3 months. I have seen tremedous changes in my husband now that he is on his meds and through the grace of God. I have been advised to get the book "what goes up must come down", by Judy something that I can not remember right now it starts with an E, I am waiting for mine to come in. They say it is about a man that had bipolar and committed sucide, it is written by his wife, but they say it has wonderful info in it. Coming to this forum will help you tons, I come here daily and sometimes rely on folks here too keep me from going nuts.
Do what your heart tells you too do as far as leaving or going, you are the best judge of what you can and cant take. These people that tell you to leave have only a view from the outside of your relationship, plus it is so easy for one to tell you what to do when it is has nothing to do with their daily life.
I will pray for you to keep a clear mind and to do what is God's will.
Hang in there and send me a message anytime you need too.
