My husband is bpI with panic disorder. he suffers from psychotic episodes and severe rage. he's not worked since september, and slacked off working for the entire year before then. we've got a mortgage, a car payment, a bike payment, and every credit card has been maxed out to pay bills. i work two jobs, but it still doesnt leave us with anything. He took five muscle relaxers along with and over abundance of his sedatives and pain meds yesterday morning because of it. Through the grace of God he pulled through it. Its hard to have faith at times like this and i will pray for you but as i told him, the world would be a darker place without him in it, and the ones who love you would suffer greatly without you around, and the same goes for you too.

Have you contacted all your creditors? oftentimes they will work with you, i.e., let you pay the interest only. also, consumer credit counseling or debt consolidation places work with your unsecured loans, even if you are not a homeowner. most places would rather work with you than not. also, a lot of places have a "hardship" program in place. i have had to do all of the above, and with the exception of very few of them, they all work with me. dont ever loose faith. keep strokin to the light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how faint it might be.

if you and your spouse are working there is Chapter 13 which is wage earner and in most cases the fee for the attorney is provided in the payment plan set up by the judge. there may be an initial fee for application but usually it is minimal.

debt counseling and talking to the creditors is perhaps what you should do first. beware though that some debt counselors and debt consolidators are scams and/or do not provide the service they advertise. i've had a sister and a friend get ripped off by a advertised debt counselor and consolidator. so, research carefully.

i'm bipolar, went $45k in debt, and filed Chapter 13. it is bankruptcy and my credit is shot to hell but it shows I'm still responsible though having to go through a judge. I am making my payments.

My husband of 7 years was just diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I have many questions and would love to have some support, that's why I'm joining you all. I saw people writing about bankruptcy. We HAVE to file, there is no way we could pay off our debt at this point. We have a 2 year old son and a 6 month old baby girl, I am the sole care giver for they and my husband so I am unable to work right now. I especially would like to hear from Marie about the Chapter 13 bankruptcy issue. What do you mean a payment plan, how does it work? I have no idea what I am doing and my husband is just starting on meds and is too fragile and stressed right now to deal with/take care of any of it. I am so overwhelmed and tired, I don't even know where to begin! HELP PLEASE FROM ANYONE!
Feel free to email me at ultramommi@hotmail.com Thanks

I am in Debt 26,000.00 age 49. My husband didnt even know what I was doing.I search the internet constantly for help..Everyone sends me "somewhere else " with no answer. when the credit cards call me.. I tell them honestly what has happened to my health this year. they dont care..But I am still searching and trusting God..to help me. I know God will supply my needs..we are not the only ones with this problem of credit card debt. there are elderly people who cant afford medicines so they charge up their credit cards. The Government has to change..If I find something I will post it..God bless..Gracie

The laws for bankruptcy, thanks to Bush, has changed in the last year so I'm not exactly sure what the exact new rules are. I do know that there is a Chapter 13 that is commonly known as the "wage earner plan".

This means that the attorney you hire and the federal judge decide, based on your income and your expenses, whether you can first file Chapter 13 (sometimes they roll you into 7 which takes care of all your debt but you lose all your belongings at the same time) or what a acceptable payment arrangement will be.

If you qualify, your attorney fee is added in as a expense, the judge sets a $ amount, and the amount is drafted from your wages or you can choose to pay them directly. You are given a certain length of time and YOU MUST MAKE EVERY SINGLE PAYMENT.

If not, all is null and voided, you can't refile bankruptcy later, and all your expenses PLUS INTEREST AND PENALTY roll right back to you. Your creditors can seize your property, etc... SO YOU MUST MAKE EVERY PAYMENT.

IT WILL KILL YOUR CREDIT COMPLETELY, IT WILL MAKE IT TREMENDOUSLY HARD TO GAIN CREDIT LATER, YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT HAVE CREDIT CARDS WHILE UNDER IT (some do but very bad if court finds out), AND THEY COULD STILL SEIZE YOUR BELONGINGS IF YOU DEFAULT. But, it stops the calls and letters and stops any foreclosures or repossessions if done early enough.

TALK WITH AN ATTORNEY AND SEEK THEIR ADVISEMENT. SOME OFFER THE FIRST CONSULTATION FREE.

Cindy, how do you do it all. Keep up the good work. How did you get a dx. for your husband? I have been married for 10 yrs. I just noticed the cycles and he is in total denial. I am at my wits end. For the first time in our lives, a divorce is nearing. I don't know what else to do to help him. Then we can concentrate on finances and then the relationship. What a long road ahead. Who knows about the future.

Actually most times your credit score will go up significantly a year or two after your BK. I work for a mortgage company and see people everyday who had a chapter 7 recently and many times their credit scores are in the high 600's...sometimes i see people with higher scores than mine and ive never been late on one bill my entire life so I dont think i would say that a chapter 7 or 13 will ruin your credit forver...people are able to purchase and refi homes only a year out from a chapter 7
