My husband had been doing great on his meds but the past week he has really gotten off schedule and has felt horrible in the mornings. I need to understand more about the importance of keeping a routine. Does it make a difference to bipolar people. How do I inforce that.

It is very important that he stay on schedule with sleep and with meds. It made a noticable difference in my mood in the morning and also throughout the day. I used to stay up until 4-5 in the morning manic as hell. It was a domino effect. The more I stayed up, the worse my mania got and my mania from staying up made me stay up the next night and so on and so on. My husband and my doctor finally got me to listen to them about having a rigid schedule and it made all the difference in the world. I used to stay up all night and then I would hit a depression the next day so hard that it made me suicidal. I used to lie about what time I would go to sleep and pretend that I was sleeping, sometimes lying on the floor or the couch. It got bad with the mania and My medicine didn't seem to work. And I believe now that it was due to my schedule being out of whack. I now take the meds at the same time and sleep at the same time . I still feel very lethargic when I wake up, but I can get up at a resonable hour and then function somewhat properly all day after getting a good nights sleep. It is important to regulate these sleep patterns. We have to rest our manic brains more than most, otherwise they dont work properly for us. Once he is regulated he will know the difference and feel the differnce and in turn find how useful sleep can be for him. YOu have to keep reminding him with love and concern and how much being off schedule effects you too.
