Hello there,

I was just wondering if it's possible to be misdiagnosed with BP. I was told today that I have BP-II. I don't believe it (denial?). Yes, I haven't been able to go to work for four weeks now and not sure when, but why can't it just be "depression" vs. BP? I've been very well informed about BP through this web-site and I can't believe this so called BP is a lifelong illness (and that I have the symptoms described)! At 47 yo, I see my life with BP for most of it -- that is if it's real. I don't get it. I thought my mood swings and depression were just part of life based on what kind of childhood/lifestyle we've had (i.e., tramatic experiences). Anyway, I'm in just in shock I suppose. My therapist wants to see me twice a week now (instead of once) and my psychiatrist wants to see every other week. I'm confused. I hope I can get some sleep tonight....

Hi Bella,

I know it's a shock when you're first diagnosed. I wasn't diagnosed until my forties, and just thought my mood swings were part of who I was--changeable, bored easily, etc.

It's good that you're learning as much as you can about bp. You'll see that it has a unique expression in each of us, yet many similarities which help us to understand each other. Also, it generally takes a 3-pronged approach: get your meds right, get your head straight, and make lifestyle changes that help keep symptoms to a minimum (like sleep, exercise, diet, etc.).

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
