Ok Im new around here for starters this is actually my first post so hello to all my fellow bp sufferers.
I have a question that I havent yet asked my doctor about and was wondering if anyone else has this happen to them so I will describe this and if anyone out there has the same problem please let me know and tell me what their doc told them, as I currently have no insurance and rely on a family doctor to prescribe my meds.
Ok here goes the scenario....Im laying in my bed and drifting off to sleep when suddenly I begin to hear noises. As soon as Im startled awake by the sounds theyre gone because they are not really there. They sound so real. The sound lately is of a loud banging like metal doors slamming shut, and once it sounded so loud it was like an elephant walking in my house. This has not happened for a while, but I never know when it may happen again. I went many years without it happening but it just recently started again. The first time it happened was right after my daughter was born in 1987. i was in my hospital room and everytime I tried to doze off, a droning of conversation between many people started happening in my head. I thought I was going crazy so I called my hubby and he talked to me and the two of us fell asleep on the phone. It was so scary for me but like I said it didnt happen again for many years until a couple of months ago. It went on for about a week then stopped again. What to make of all this...any suggestions? Thanks, Briar

Hi Briar,
There is a chance that it is a form of a sleep disorder. Of course it is possible it is linked to the BP. If it's related to a sleep disorder it could be hypnagogic hallucinations. They can be visual or auditory.

I have heard of auditory hallucinations accompanying either bipolar disorder or meds used to treat it. I'm not familiar with the condition John's Girl described, but it certainly sounds like a possible culprit. I don't get auditory hallucinations, but I get visual ones, shadows on the edge of my vision.
