My 16 yr old daughter has suffered from depression, severe mood swings and extreme irritability/temper tantrums her whole life. Four years ago she was in counseling for 9 months with a counselor I really liked, but it seemed to do no good. (Daughter's moods would make her totally irrational at times.) Two years ago I took her to a psychiatrist for what I thought was depression and was told she had ADHD. Meds helped with some issues (better concentration and less impulsiveness), but I still have to walk on eggshells around her most of the time. She has what I would call dangerous behaviors (ie. walking around my not so safe neighborhood alone at night), which led to her being attacked and a whole new reason for depression. Doctor is now treating the depression and much more pronounced anxiety, but my daughter can't even go to school now and I am frustrated! I have talked to doctor about possibility of BP, but he still just thinks it's ADHD. Anyone know of a good adolescent psychiatrist in the Atlanta area that believes BP is more common in kids than previously thought? Do any of my experiences seem like things you have experienced?

Yes! My nine year old has severe mood swings..typically gets super hyper 1 hour then turns into a rage 30 min-1 hour. The pshyciatrist says he has ADHD and he is on ritalin(2 weeks now). His rages are more violent now. He is able to concentrate better though. The doctor says if the meds dont work then his councelor will need to help him with the behavior issues. I am sure he is bipolar as his dad is and several others on his dads side. Any suggestions?
