We just moved my M-i-L into our home in FLA from MICH. She's 96 and according to all the symptoms I've read, I believe she has AD. It's especially hard because she has no doctor here. She really didn't have one in MICH either...she was healthy and wouldn't go even if she was sick. So... now she's with us, and we need to find some help. Would like to find someone in Central Florida that specializes in geriatric medicine. ANY suggestions or helpful comments would be appreciated.

Hi, Karen,

You are exactly on the right track - and I hope you have found some medical assistance in Florida. When I was looking for a doctor in my area (Texas) for my mom (who was moving into this area), I contacted a friend who was connections into the local university's Health Science Center. He knew a lot of the doctors - and if he didn't know them personally, his connections would recommend medical personnel that might work. So with that said, check with your own doctor or your connections to the medical community. They can help point you in the right direction to someone that everyone is your immediate family can work with.

I'd also suggest contacting the local Alzheimer's support group and see if the participants have any good recommendations. It's obviously important that your mother-in-law likes the doctor (although, if she is like my mom is, she'll forget the conversation she had with the doctor five minutes later and then claim her health is wonderful). But it's equally important for you and your husband to like the doctor because the weight of medical decision will increasingly fall more on you. Make sure you select someone that ya'll trust and can communicate effectively with.

Good luck!

Dorian Martin
