Hi there...I just wanted to say that yes, the first time ...about a year ago, that I had a terrible acid reflux attack..chest pain...and a lot of other horrible symptoms...I went to the ER..spent the night in the hospital..had my heart monitored...and everything was fine, thus the drs. said acid reflux...and yes, I did have a panic attack with it...I think triggered by my fright of a heart attack...I am only 42...and exercise, am not overweight...and I think even now..when I get the symptoms I get very anxious.

I was diagnosed with acid reflux in Nov. I was put on aciphex. I immediately starting having daily horrible anxiety attacks. ER twice and EMS Called once. I think aciphex was the cause--it is listed as a side effect. However, now I am not taking anything for three days and this lump feeling in the base of my throat is continuing to make me feel anxious. I have lost lots of weight. I am 42, in good shape, vegetarian. I don't know what to do!!

Hi Melissa,

There's a section on this site with drug information: http://www.healthcentral.com/acid-reflux/find-drug.html Perhaps you would find it helpful.

Has anyone experienced similar side effects?

I take aciphex and so far have not suffered any side affects, other then my wallet gets thinner.
it does help. I have had some terrible night time attacks that would have scared the bejesus out of me if I had not known what it was. half a spoon of baking soda gives me relief in about 15 minutes. I will sip on ice water till I can try to sleep again. mix the baking soda in some luke warm water to get it down with. it tastes terrible but it helps. A shot of apple cider vinegar helps too BUT DON'T MIX THEM. think of the volcanoes that kids make in school with soda and vinegar. heard that snacking on apples helps, maybe something in them that does? will try that

Hi Everyone

I seem to have my acid reflux anxiety attacks on my way home from work every day. Sometimes I wonder if I bring them on myself. I've had them so bad where my left arm tingled and I became very dizzy - since them and after a few visits to ER, I've learned to take deep breaths and try to calm myself down. I hate acid reflux but think I have to calm down too.

Hi my name is Angie and my dad has acid reflux disease. He is 46 and vomits 7 to 8 times a day, cant sleep at night, has uncontrollable burping, and cant really do anything anymore. The doctors seem to not be concerned with his case anymore but I know someone is out there that does care. I am really needing some advice on what to do for him or what to do next. He had stomach cancer in 1983 and due to excessive radiation, he has developed this disease. I have searched everywhere and dont know what to do now. He currently weighs 120lbs and has had to undergo hip surgery, which is now giving him trouble due to his infection levels being elevated to 18,000s. And now our concerns are that if we cant get this infection level to go down then we may be looking at the possiblity of him developin leukemia. Any advice at all is appreciated!!!

Angie28: See a Naturopath. If your state or province doesn't regulate them (most don't), then be very very sure to find one who went to one of the four schools required by those states/provinces that do. (Unfortunately the only one that comes to mind at the moment is the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine but there are 3 more. You can contact the CCNM for information on where to find someone in your area I'm sure.) Naturopaths can really help people improve their quality of life when doctor's no longer can (due to limited resources, they often need to focus on those people whose conditions are immediately life threatening as opposed to lifestyle threatening). I'm not a naturopath so this isn't an add campaign, I've just been helped ~tremendously~ by Naturopaths in the last 8 years (for an unrelated condition) and am so grateful. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you need help finding someone.

EVERYONE ELSE (Especially MELISSA):

"Some people have GERD without heartburn. Instead, they experience pain in the chest, hoarseness in the morning, or trouble swallowing. You may feel like you have food stuck in your throat or like you are choking or your throat is tight. GERD can also cause a dry cough and bad breath."

I'm new here and am not sure how to start a new post. Hope I'm doing this correctly.

My question is whether any of you with acid reflux or GERD have had any trouble with reflux when using a liquid prep (like Nulytely or a similar product) for a colonoscopy. I need to have one done, but am worried about the prep because most of those contain a lot of salt and salty things usually trigger reflux for me. I'm more worried about having reflux from the prep than about the procedure itself.

Have any of you with reflux had a colonoscopy? Did the prep give you reflux? Not looking forward to this and could use some advice.

just getting over an attack now as i write this.....woke up about 20 minutes ago with a nasty taste in my mouth and throat...scratchy painful feeling in my throat....some moderate chest pain. this is the second or third time i've ever had one.....the first time i almost went to the ER, but my wife called her friend who is a PA and she said it was probably acid reflux.....which made sense with the nasty taste i had in my mouth. my throat gets raspy and that taste is god-awful....this time i made some coffee to try and sooth my throat and chest (this is a tip i learned from having asthma as a kid) and it definitely seems to be helping.

Hi all-
I had a rough time with some oral surgery, and was put on multiple rounds of antibiotics. Between that burning a hole in my stomach and practically making me a nervous wreck, my acid reflux is horrible. I have chronic lump in my throat, and its always sore. My stomach hurts whenever i eat certain foods, even if its part of my diet. My throat and chest always feels as if its burning. I saw my gastro dr and he put me on aciphex which did not work, so I'm now on protonix. It helps me somewhat, but there are days when it comes back. Ive been on the protonix about 2 weeks now, twice a day. If i have to live with this for the rest of my life, i don't know what i'd do, because its absolutely horrible. Is there anyone out there who experienced something similar or who can give me some ideas as to how i can overcome this? THANKS!!!!!!!!

[Hi! I am 28 and suffering from acid reflux for 2 years now! Done everything possible to fix it and noting is helping! Only sleep helps! Within the last year I have developed anxiety attacks also-- it started only when eating now it has become a huge problem! I have started avoiding eating in public and now am starting to think I am afraid to be in public places. This is ruining my life and nothing seems to help! I think we are going through the same thing-- if you find anything that helps-- please let me know! I have started seeing a psychologist but this is a lengthy process!

My Breakdown!3 Christmas' ago.
SymptomsRed Faceut of the blue on Christmas morning on an empty stomach.
: fullness below and inbetween my breast
: nausiousness,lightheaded,turning white,cold
Went to the car to leave families while husband got kids got very dizzy and tingly rushing feeling throughout body leaned out to puke? Past out instead. Husband found me woke me up and I immediatley started vomitting and had excessive bowel issues. Thought it was flu.
Next day fine! Woke 2am. 2 months later thought I was dying. All same sympotms but very fast this time. Sat in bathroom for hours in tears and totally scared. Went to DR. said it was panic attacks. Stupid DR. I aslo experienced alot of bowel issues.
Symptoms occured about once a week always at night while sleeping for about 6 months. Went to 2 other DR. same exuse I WAS NOT DEPRESSED OR HAVING PANIC DISSORDER. Got bad at work went to ER saw DR did xray bowels totally blocked with crap!!! Took meds to clean out fine for a while woke up again late night all same attack. At this point Im really going crazy thought I had a terrible illness. I am a mom so it was worse thinking about that. Went to DR. in the clinic of that ER DR. since he at least tried. New DR. said acid reflux???? What I dont even get heartburn,DR said the hole in the (sp)asophagis gets acid in it and causes brain to think something is wrong causing the attaks. Happens at night because you are lying down also ulcers cause panic attack symptons too and most people with this bad of reflux prob. have ulcers.
Take protonix expensive! But it works. When I stopped taking it I had another attack. I do not care if I have to take it forever these attacks are almost unbearable. I have learned there is a surgery you can get to correct most cases and that it is extremely easy and works very well. I dont have insurance so it is meds for me.
Certain foods for me are Cajun & chili seasons
Coke DR.pepper, and alcohol even with meds, I drank one light drink on new years eve and had an attack later that night. I also get that choking and burping all the time and last year got larengitus because of reflux. Dr. said smoking has a bad affect on it as well. I belive that because alot of my attacks were while I smoked on occassion. I dont anymore!!
During attacks: I relax, bundle up and get warm (cold seems to make it worse)Dr. says water can actually make it worse it helps the acid to rise. I stay calm and take deep breaths try to poop or burp to release anything in the stomach that could be activating it, get up and sit on the sofa, watch tv to focus on something else I never go back to bed it always comes back once it starts in the night I usually sleep sitting up on the sofa, always lay down with propped pillows. I have learned stress activates reflux as well so learn to say I dont care or NO.
Question: Does anyone have bowel issues with there attacks like I do? And any ideas of what helps for you and what makes it worse.
