Hi all. I just went to my doctor and told him that I have been having episodes of very severe heartburn, lasting for hours on end. He asked me if the pain went to my back and I said, yes. I thought he was thinking cardiac with that question. I have never heard of pain in the back with GERD. Is this common? My fear is that it is cardiac (I'm 48 and a 1 PPD smoker, unfortunately). He sent me out on Protonix, so I guess he wasn't thinking cardiac. The pain is like heartburn (acid coming up), but also kind of gripping right in the heart area and straight through to my back, which comes in waves. Is this normal? There's no shortness of breath or arm pain with it. I'm not taking the Protonix because GERD is not that bothersome for me where I think I need to take medication daily. Thanks. Any information is appreciated.
I too, suffered with upper back and neck pain. And I tried protonix, didn't help. For the back pain, I went to my chiropracter, let him know you suffer from acid reflux. And if your acid reflux is bothering you again, try gaviscon. I just recommended it to someone else on this board, it's very strong stuff.
I came across this site accidentally but let me tell you, I sure am glad I did! Today, I had to tell my supervisor that I could no longer work full-time hours as a medical secretary as I have been plagued with so many symptoms in the past two months that I can no longer cope. I have Crohn's disease and severe GERD. I am being tried on a course of Imuran to help with the Crohn's. Since this is the most serious illness out of the two, all the emphasis is always on that one. Last week, while I was lying down watching tv, I had this unbelievable fullness and burning directly under my rib cage radiating into my back. I did have the nausea. I thought I was having a heart attack. I'm only 36 years old so the likeliness of that is lower than a flare-up of GERD. After I read the different messages here, it relieved me to the greatest degree knowing that back pain IS also part of GERD. Could GERD also cause a pain in the right arm? This one worries me a bit. If anybody knows, please tell!
I'm so glad If ound this website because I have the same symptoms you have been talking about. heart burn which starts in the chest as a pain and then moves up to my throat and it goes through to my my back too. I was diagnosed with acid reflux by my doctor and put on zotrole 30mg 1 a day. they have definately helped because now I don't get nausious in the morning and bring up yellow bile anymore. which obviously makes waking up in the morning much more pleasent. I was also told to use galviscon and i find it very helpfull - i rang out the day before yesterday and last nite as soon as i was lying down about to go asleep i got the worst heart burn which continued from my chest all the way up my throat. I hope to here your htoughts soon. Gemma.
the heartburn you feel is stomach acid traveling back up through your esophagus. this happens when the lower esophageal sphincter fails to close properly. a good thing to do is try not to eat or drink any sodas for at least 3 - 4 hours before going to bed. i hope this helps.
I'm a 45 yr old man, in reasonable good shape, and just spent the better part of last Saturday night/Sunday morning in the ER! Chest pain started around 9:30, was about nipple height, and radiating up into my throat, around behind my shoulder blades, and down my left shoulder and arm. Of course, a 40+ male with chest pains....I had an EKG, aspirin, and nitro on board within 5 minutes of my arrival! The EKG and blood work turned up clean, and I spent a pretty bad time writhing in pain while the ER nurse asked stuff like, "on a scale of 1 to 10....", before they finally gave me some Dilaudid for the pain. I'm still having less severe symptoms now, 4 days later, even though I've been on Protonix and Rolaids ever since. My working hypothesis since then has been that it is GERD or similar, since the EKG and blood chem were clean from a cardiac standpoint, I had a follow-up visit with a cardiologist today and he didn't give me much love- recommended a Dual Isotope Stress Test and Echocardiogram ASAP (tomorrow!). Kind of like a "Scared Straight" episode.

Hi Jeff. I am also having similar problems. And since I am only 29, I am pretty nervous as well. I had an EKG which came out ok but I have to be put on a holter moniter and have an echocardiogram later this month. If it were anything really serious with our hearts, it would have shown up on the EKG, right?
A week ago I was put on Doxycycline to help with acne, and shortly afterwards, I was awoken in the middle of the night (about 3am) by severe heart burn/acid reflux (my first time getting it.) Ever since, I have had terrible trouble swallowing food, and burping (which seems to be more frequent now.) When I eat or burp, I get a sharp stabbing nearly intolerable pain in my upper middle back, and it will spread to my chest. My doc put me on Nexium 40 MG. Does this sound like GERD, and if so, can GERD be brought on by taking medicine like Doxycycline?

Doxycycline may cause esophageal ulceration if the capsules for some reason do not reach the stomach but remain in the esophagus. The best advice for doxycycline in order to minimize the risk of esophageal damage is probably to take it with a meal. This drug can be taken with food with minimal effect on absorption.
To those of you having the the back pain and left arm pain. Thank you, so much for posting. The last month have been complete he** for me. I have had 2 ekg's a stress test and the upper gi scope. I feel like I am losing my mind. The tests came back good only with mild reflux but never telling me the back and arm pain are from reflux. I have caused myself more axiety and unrealated symptoms just from the stress of not knowing whats wrong. I still don't know for sure but it really is an unsettleing sensation.
I AM 71/2 MONTHS PREGNANT AND I HAVE REALLY BAD BACK AND NECK PAINS FROM ACID REFLUX. MY DOC PRESCRIBED 30MG OF PREVACID.. MY QUESTION IS, IS THERE ANYONE THAT KNOWS ANY HOME REMEDIES I COULD DO THAT WILL NOT HARM MY BABY?
I am so glad I found this site. I have been experincing alot of these symptoms and have been having much stress over what the Heck is wrong with me. Everyone suddenly becomes a dr. when you have something wrong with you. I have had a "pressure" (feels like a knot or babies foot in my breast bone area) for about a yr now. I have been to e.r.'s and uregnt docs thinking I was having heart problems. They did an ekg and chest x-ray. No problems and my blood pressure is almost perfect.( I should mention here I am a smoker and have heart problems in my family) I was tested for H. plori and it was negative. Tues. I went to the dr. and he put me on acid reducers and acid blockers and told me to take mylaanta 2 hrs. after meals and before bed. So far this has helped some, but now I am experincing pain in my right arm, radiating to my back going up around the side of my breast and shoulder, and my nexk and lower jaw. All on the right side. This is very scary for me, so I must ask has anyone had this problem associated with Gerds or gallbladder problems? If so please let me know.
